So that was a lot of info right!? Tons of stuff to have learned and know! Had to know what all those tests components were for, their normal and abnormal values, what it ment if a value was too high or too low, how the test's components related to one another, what disease process could be related to a particular value out of it's norm, and possible signs and symptoms and individual may exhibit due to an abnormal value! Yeah, tons of stuff! It was nice being able to break up all that info over the last couple weeks and not being required to learn it all overnight (like one would do for an exam right?! lol). But I feel as though I have a good jist of the CMP test and its components. Not going to lie, I dont know all those values and predicted diseases like the back of my hand! But have a good round about idea as to which component is related to which disease process and what could possibly result in abnormal levels. I was able to look at a couple of the Sister's lab results, which I can not put on here because of HIPPA, but was able to see which ones were out of range and guesstimate reasons for the abnormal values. After looking at the lab results, I consulted back to their charts with diagnoses, and my guesstimates were right! One sister had elevated BUN and glucose levels because she was diabetic, another had elevated BUN and creatinine levels with low albumin because her kidneys are staring to malfunction and/or not work as effectively. Whenever someone gets a blood test done, and guilty as charged, I would just look at the numbers and see if they were in range or not. And because I am relatively young and healthy, they are, but if something was out of norm, I wouldn't have ever known what it signified! Next week, as the second part of my objective #2, I will start describing the components of a CBC/diff test, including abnormalities and possible disease processes the values might indicate and possible signs and symptoms expected to see. Again, sorry in advance, it's going to be a bit dry... but we'll get through it!
